Dehradun: A worker injured in a tunnel accident last week at Pipalkoti in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district succumbed to his injuries during treatment on Wednesday, raising the death toll from the incident to 11.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Rohit Pandey (20), a native of Gopalganj in Bihar, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh.

A total of 22 workers were trapped inside the approximately three-kilometre-long tunnel when a landslide led to an influx of debris and water into it on August 13.

Of these, 12, including Pandey, were rescued with injuries, while the bodies of the other 10 were recovered.

Officials had stated that joint teams comprising the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies successfully completed the search and rescue operation through mutual coordination, despite the presence of heavy sludge and adverse conditions inside the tunnel.
